The shilajit group showed a significant increase in total testosterone — around 20% — along with increases in free testosterone and DHEA-S. Notably, the gonadotropic hormones LH and FSH remained stable, which suggests the effect did not come at the cost of disrupting the signalling chain above the testes.
The ashwagandha evidence
Ashwagandha has been studied more often, with more mixed results. A systematic review published in Advances in Nutrition in 2021 examined four randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies covering 197 men in total. Three of the four found that at least eight weeks of ashwagandha raised testosterone more than placebo. One found no effect.
The most frequently quoted individual trial (Wankhede et al., 2015) found that men taking 600 mg of ashwagandha root extract daily for eight weeks saw a mean testosterone increase of 96.2 ng/dL, against 18.0 ng/dL for placebo. A 2024 systematic review in the Journal of Population Therapeutics and Clinical Pharmacology pooled 15 clinical studies covering 1,254 participants and found supportive evidence for shilajit in chronic fatigue, high-altitude sickness, cognitive function and male fertility. The reviewers' own conclusion was that most trials were small and that larger, longer, better-controlled studies are needed before firm claims are justified.
One eight-week placebo-controlled trial in 63 recreationally active men found that 250–500 mg of purified shilajit daily reduced the decline in muscle strength under fatigue. That is a performance endpoint, not a hormonal one, and the sample was small.
The honest position: shilajit's energy evidence is promising and preliminary. It is not on the same footing as ashwagandha's stress evidence, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something.
