Global Journal for Research Analysis (GJRA), Volume 8, Issue 11 (November 2019), DOI: 10.36106/gjra.
Objective:
The aim of this randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled trial was to evaluate the efficacy of the herbal compound “AVS Vajikaran”, composed of equal quantities of Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha), Pueraria tuberosa (Vidarikanda) & Asparagus racemosus (Shatavari), in the management of male sexual dysfunction (Klaibya / erectile dysfunction) in males aged 21-55 years.
Methodology:
- Study design: Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled.
- Participants: 100 male patients selected from the Kayachikitsa OPD of Government Ayurvedic College & Hospital, Guwahati who met clinical criteria for Klaibya. Of these, 68 patients were assigned to the treatment group (Group A) & 32 to the placebo group (Group B).
- Inclusion criteria: Age >21 & <55 years; marked reduction in sexual function over past 4 weeks; inability to maintain erection or sufficient rigidity.
- Exclusion criteria: Age <21 or >55 years, presence of major systemic disease (cardiac, hypertension, thyroid, diabetes, STD, spinal cord injury, congenital genital abnormality etc.).
- Intervention: The treatment group received AVS Vajikaran (Ashwagandha-Vidarikanda-Shatavari churna) 3 g twice daily with lukewarm milk after meals, for 4 weeks, with follow-ups every week.
- Outcome measures: Subjective parameters using the IIEF (International Index of Erectile Function) questionnaire; objective parameters included serum free testosterone & routine biochemical/haematological tests to assess safety.
Results:
- The treatment group (Group A) showed highly significant improvement (p < 0.00001) in erection quality, rigidity during intercourse, orgasmic function, ejaculatory control, sexual desire & intercourse satisfaction compared to the placebo group, which showed minimal or non-significant changes.
- For example, mean erection score improved from ~8.82 to ~20.14 in Group A (versus ~9.56 to ~10.22 in Group B) with p < 0.0001.
- Serum free testosterone levels in a subgroup of 31 patients improved significantly in the treatment group during the 60-day (4-week treatment + follow-up) period (p < 0.00001).
- The herbal formulation was well tolerated & no adverse effects or significant changes in safety parameters (blood/biochemistry) were reported.
Conclusion:
The authors conclude that the poly-herbal formulation AVS Vajikaran, comprising Ashwagandha, Vidarikanda & Shatavari, demonstrated clinically meaningful improvements in male sexual dysfunction & associated parameters (erection, desire, orgasmic control, testosterone levels) within a short course of treatment & can be considered a safe & effective alternative in the Ayurvedic management of erectile dysfunction (Klaibya).
